Position Description

Part-time position:  30 hours per week- full time

Compensation:    $16.50 per hour with some benefits

Goal

The Bloomfield Garfield Corporation (BGC) is seeking a staff person to help with coordinating a number of initiatives and programs in the Garfield neighborhood  (Greenzone) and Penn Avenue corridor. Although this position reports to the Chief Operations Officer, the employee will be working directly with and under the guidance of the Community Engagement and Planning Specialist. This staff member will coordinate efforts for the community around environmental and public safety issues. This includes the use of a combination of volunteers from the neighborhood and people who have been assigned by the district magistrate’s office to perform community service hours to implement these projects or activities. This is an evolving project and this individual should anticipate being assigned other duties, as needed.

The Garfield Green Zone will provide a platform for bringing area residents into greater contact with natural spaces while providing a pathway for non-violent offenders to avoid incarceration. The primary goals of the project are maximizing the benefit of available green space for the entire, diverse Garfield community, diverting community members from jail, facilitating the reduction of participants’ fines, and, where applicable, supporting the development of marketable job skills.

Roles and Responsibilities (highlights)

Plan events around and assemble volunteers to assist with, implementing various aspects of the Garfield Greenway plan, including clean-ups, tree plantings, and other projects, including community outreach;

Create a pool of volunteer labor from persons assigned by the district magistrate’s court to perform community service hours that will assist the BGC in maintaining and enhancing public spaces in Garfield and in the Penn Avenue corridor; Ensure that these volunteers have the necessary clearances and provide all training and supervision required for them to be effective in their roles; Handle all reporting to the court on the hours expended by these volunteers;

Oversee day‐to‐day property maintenance, including Identify and collect data on parcels that are eligible for BGC green zone acquisition, perform audit of conditions of properties, identify use for spaces, and manage acquisition and land use processes

Provide quality customer service to internal and external stakeholders and the general public; including interfacing with referred clients to relay clear expectations and with the court and associated programs (probation, parole, CISP, etc) to maintain clear channels of communication

Participate in Public Safety Initiatives, this includes reporting 311 issues, work with groups such as Zone 5 Police around community issues, organization of the Ambassador program, conduct Garfield Public Safety Task Force meetings, and attend Zone 5 Public Safety Council meetings.

Requirements of Position:

  • Good interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, G-mail and Google Drive
  • Ability to meet deadlines in a timely manner, often with quick-turnarounds
  • Comfortable making phone calls and distributing flyers in community
  • Occasional availability in the evenings and on weekends for meetings or activities.
  • Strong team-building skills.
  • Valid PA drive’s license and access to a reliable motor vehicle when needed
  • Experience or interest in land stewardship and/or urban agriculture
  • Ability to pass PA Act 33/34 and FBI fingerprint clearances
  • Residence, upbringing, or family in Garfield, East End, or close proximity preferred
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
  • Qualified ex-offenders encouraged to apply

Experience

  • History of working with diverse and/or underrepresented or disadvantaged populations
  • Some background in organizing or coordinating advocacy or grass-roots campaigns or projects
  • Associate’s degree or B. A. degree in field of related interest

Garfield Night Market Coordinator

Compensation:  $15/hr

Hours: 40 hours a month

It pursues this mission by engaging members of the community in projects, programs, and activities that foster better physical, economic and social conditions within the BGC’s area of focus, and by enabling residents of all ages to realize their full educational and/or economic potential.

Job Summary:

Although this position reports to the Chief Operations Officer, you will be working directly with and under the guidance of the Community Engagement and Planning Specialist. This part time position will run from June through the beginning of October, with markets scheduled for July, August, September, and October first Fridays evenings.

The Garfield Night Market has four goals:

  • To foster Garfield’s entrepreneurs,
  • To give families a place to spend a Friday night together,
  • To highlight Garfield’s creativity and energy, and
  • To increase Garfield’s visibility to the rest of Pittsburgh by building a bridge between Garfield and Penn Avenue Unblurred.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  1.   Public relations for the market, including the distribution of print materials in and around Garfield, Bloomfield, East Liberty, and Lawrenceville, managing press coverage, updating directories, and maintaining activity on several social media outlets
  2.   Vendor recruitment, outreach and coordination, including obtaining weekly updates from vendors during the season
  3.   Collection of dues and weekly record-keeping
  4.   Monthly operations of the market including oversight of vendors and site management
  5.   Assist with research for market best practices and potential funding sources
  6.   Keep track of and maintain relationships with local sponsors, and special event performers

Qualifications:

  • Must be organized and pay close attention to detail
  • Access to a car and a valid driver’s license
  • Experience with Excel or Google Sheets
  • Ability to self-direct and manage
  • Ability think creatively about challenges and solutions
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Strong experience with social media
  • Ability to forge relationships with all stakeholders, including vendors, customers, active community members, and local business owners
  • Residence in Garfield or East End preferred (or close proximity)
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds

Hours explained:

The week of the Garfield Night Market’s hours are not to exceed 15 hours/week.

The rest of the weeks’ hours are not to exceed 10 hours/week.

Schedule is flexible except for First Friday of the month when the Garfield Night Market is scheduled and required monthly meetings.
