The BGC is seeking a Community Engagement & Planning Specialist to join our team!

Position Overview
Reports to: Chief Operations Officer

The Community Engagement & Planning Specialist serves as a primary point of contact for residents, property and business owners, government officials, and representatives of other public and private institutions who seek the engagement of the BGC, or desire involvement with the organization in pursuing improvement in the social, economic or physical environment of the community.

Responsibilities & Duties
➢ Administer programs, projects, and other activities that are consistent with the BGC’s goals and
objectives to improve the quality of life in the residential and commercial districts covered by the
BGC, and are consistent with the BGC’s own strategic plan.
➢ Utilize the energies of the Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers in achieving the goals and
objectives tied to improving the quality of life in the community, and partner with other nonprofits in
the community as needed to achieve them.
➢ Engage in outreach to residents and other members of the larger community to publicize events and
opportunities to ensure they are informed and able to take advantage of or participate in them.
➢ Collaborate with the Marketing and Communications Manager in utilizing print and social media to
broaden public awareness of the BGC’s programs, projects and activities.
➢ Act as a liaison, with the approval of the Executive Director, to outside organizations or institutions
whose work or mission intersects with the BGC’s mission in the community. Advocate on behalf of
residents, business owners, or property owners who are often overlooked and unheard.
➢ Undertake any activities or tasks not specified above that may be assigned by the Executive Director or
Chief Operations Officer, and are consistent with the organization’s mission.
➢ Develop and maintain all databases related to the organization’s community planning and
development programs and projects.
➢ Coordinate special events in Garfield or on Penn Avenue that support the achievement of
specific objectives of the BGC and that engage stakeholders.
➢ Participate in all public meetings in the community that are convened by outside
agencies, organizations and individuals for the planning and implementation of
significant projects in Garfield.
➢ Work closely with the Executive Director on projects to engage community members in
planning housing development and other related programs or educational events.
➢ Provide information for and participate in the development of grant applications related
to funding community planning or development efforts.
➢ Organize 2 – 3 “State of the Neighborhood” meetings to identify issues of concerns to
neighborhood stakeholders

Required Skills
➢ Possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
➢ Be able to work with a diverse range of constituents and organizations.
➢ Be action-oriented and comfortable in the role of change agent in the community.
➢ Be knowledgeable of the role local and state governments play in addressing conditions
within communities, like Garfield.
➢ Be able to design materials and use social media platforms to communicate the BGC’s
message, both internally and externally, in an effective, timely manner.
➢ Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace
Other Requirements of Position
➢ Should have own means of transportation;
➢ Should be willing to work evenings periodically and an occasional Saturday;
➢ Should possess the minimum of a Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience in duties related to
community planning, organizing, and fund-raising;
➢ Should be able to work in a team-like fashion with other staff members;

Compensation
➢ Hourly wage range of $20 – $22 per hour for a 35-hour per week position, to be commensurate with
field experience and/or educational background;
➢ Medical, dental, and other fringe benefits provided, per employee handbook
