Penn Avenue Reconstruction

Project Update

What’s happened so far

Work is underway on Phase II of the Penn Avenue Reconstruction project. The city’s contractor has been working on drainage improvements between Pacific and Atlantic and continuing sidewalk work between Evaline and Pacific.

As drainage work continues, slight adjustments to the pedestrian walkway may be necessary. Please be aware that the transition from protected pedestrian walkway to the sidewalk may be changing as they progress.

For access to businesses and other establishments along the south sidewalk be on the lookout for temporary pedestrian access structures like the one below.

What’s coming in the next two weeks

Sidewalk work between Evaline and Pacific should be wrapping up. Starting next week the contractor will be installing temporary speed humps at three locations along Broad Street:

between Evaline and Pacific

between Pacific and Atlantic

between Atlantic and Aiken

An additional temporary speed hump will be added on Aiken between Coral and Friendship.

Temporary “No Parking” signs will be in place for a few days closer to installation.

What’s coming after that

Once drainage work is finished between Pacific and Atlantic, road surface reconstruction will begin.

Other things to know

• Vehicular access to Aldi will be maintained at all times from the driveway on Pacific. When roadway work begins between Pacific and Atlantic, the driveway on Penn will be closed for a period of time. During the current phase Pacific is restricted to one-way traffic southbound. Drivers exiting the parking lot are required to turn left on Pacific and cannot get directly on to Penn. To get back to Penn drivers should use Evaline or Atlantic.

• Concrete work requires careful timing for joint cutting to minimize potential for cracking while curing. To meet that timing and deliver the best possible product we are working with the contractor to allow additional flexibility in work hours around concrete pours. Concrete pouring will be allowed as early as 6 a.m., but saw cutting will be restricted until after 7 a.m. Both activities will be allowed to proceed until 8 p.m. These extended hours should only be necessary a few times per block.
