This September, Pittsburgh’s vibrant arts community will come together for the 48 Hour Mural Project: Pittsburgh, a high-energy, community-centered event challenging artists to create large-scale murals in just one weekend. Hosted at the former Leslie Park Pool, a beloved neighborhood landmark slated for demolition, the project offers a unique opportunity for artists and residents to celebrate the pool’s history while leaving a lasting visual tribute to the Lawrenceville neighborhood.
The event is locally organized by Most Wanted Fine Art, in collaboration with BOOM Concepts, the Bloomfield-Garfield Corporation, and Lawrenceville United. Together, these organizations are fostering a bold creative exchange that combines public art, community engagement, and neighborhood storytelling. Lead sponsorship is provided by ABARTA Coca-Cola Beverages, supporting the event’s mission of accessible, inclusive arts experiences for all Pittsburgh residents.
“Through these murals, we’re giving the community a chance to say goodbye to this icon in a way that is joyful, colorful, and reflective of Lawrenceville’s spirit. This collaboration between arts organizations and community groups ensures that the neighborhood’s history is honored while celebrating its creativity and resilience.” said Nina Gibbs, project organizer.
The mural project officially kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26. During the kickoff, the invited artists will receive their assigned mural sections and creative prompts, including required elements that highlight neighborhood identity, sponsor recognition, and a shared creative character and prop linked to the 48 Hour Film Project, which is collaborating this year. Artists then have 48 hours to complete their murals.
The public unveiling and mural deadline occurs by 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28 providing neighbors and visitors the chance to see the completed works firsthand. Following the mural weekend, the project will celebrate artists and filmmakers alike with an awards ceremony and film screening at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30 at Rangos Giant Cinema in the Carnegie Science Center.
